Over the past few years a growing number of studies have reported significant project failure in terms of delay, cost or delivery.
In 2012, McKinsey & Company conducted a survey on 5 400 large scale IT projects, that showed that 45 % experienced cost overruns ; 7 % experienced schedule overruns and 56 % experienced benefits shortfall.
The survey showed also that 17 % of those large IT projects went so badly that they can threaten the very existence of the company.
Gallup Business Journal reported a study by PwC, which reviewed 10 640 projects from 200 companies in 30 countries across various industries. The study showed that only 2.5% of companies successfully complete 100% of their projects.
A similar study published by the Harvard Business Review–analyzing a total of 1 471 IT projects–found that found that the average overrun was 27%, but one in six projects had a cost overrun of 200% on average and a schedule overrun of almost 70%.
